Not all cats react to catnip though as their attraction to this herb depends on genes and age. About 1/3 of cats doesn't have the "catnip gene" making them uninterested in this herb. Kittens under 6 months old and elderly cats also typically won't react to the essential oil nepetalactone.
Smelling the catnip without ingesting it would trigger happy endorphins in your cat’s brain causing them to become hyperactive whereas if cats ingest catnip, it would usually mellow them out instead. These highs can last between five to ten minutes.
